My Name

AnDrea Taylor, '24

AnDrea Taylor.

Born on a sunday, October 2nd, born after the storm of Hurricane Katrina

Cut out the womb in 2005, only 4 months after my parents were wed

In Indianapolis, Indiana.

A place I was told to never call home, everything was better in Illinois.

But if Indiana isn’t my home, why was I born there?

I feel like a poser in my own home.

Like I’m just an alien wearing the stolen skin of a human being

My name is AnDrea Taylor.

Born to a black father and a half black, half white mother

Where even the tiniest drop of white blood casted me out

Too white to fit in with the black kids

Too black to fit in with the white kids

I’m just me, and that’s all I

ever will be
