Where I’m From

by Marley Garcia, ’24

I am from Sketchbook and pencils that always get dirty,

I am from the loud parties, full of culture and freedom,

I am from where sunflowers are searching for the sun ,

I’m from Party of Quneicaneas and Day of the Dead every year,

Im from Guadalupe and Garcia-Lopez who always have hope but won’t let you go.

I’m from the loud noises and non-stop barking from dogs that you will get used to when falling asleep,

Im from my family would always tell me ” te queremos tanto” ( we love you so much ) and ” Por qué no eres normal?” ( Why aren’t you normal? ).

I’m from Catholicism, who don’t go to church but we pray every day.

I’m from  Illinois but my family is from Tabasco and Mexico City

I am from where mole with chicken is made and warm soup called pozole every winter and sometimes fall

Under the bed and inside the closet, they’re full of boxes that have items and pictures of my family’s past.

I have photos of my grandparents when they were young to when they started creating a family and the rings from my grandfathers that my parents wore to remember their love,

They are all from Mexico and i’m proud of my culture.
